The latest estimates for heads of sheep in South Africa. are 29,3 million. Sheep farming is concentrated mainly in the Northern and Eastern Cape, Western Cape, Free State (The Karoo)
Mpumalanga with Ermelo is one of the largest wool producing districts. Most sheep are fine-wood Merino(50%)
Other breeds include the locally developed Afrino and Letelle(wooled mutton breeds adapted to arid conditions. Merino, Dorper, the South African mutton Merino, the Dohne and the Merino land sheep. These minor wool breeds, namely the Dorper, a highly productive locally-developed mutton breed for arid regions and the Merino, account for most of South Africa’s mutton production.
