Fruit Farms

The Cape is renowned the world over for its wide variety of delicious fruit. As early as the 17th century people discovered that the Cape’s fertile soil, temperate climate and abundance of sunshine combine to produce fruit of exceptional taste and quality, and to this day these are the characteristics enjoyed by fruit lovers everywhere.

Today the Cape’s fruit regions reach into the Overberg, the Boland and Little Karoo-and well beyond; varied landscapes of startling beauty and tranquility.

The Ceres Area

The Ceres Valley and the surrounding Warm and Koue(Cold) Bokkeveld(Buckveld) produce a stunning variety of delicious deciduous fruit. Ceres is known as pear country, mainly because if its fabulous Bon Chretien and Packhams Triumph varieties. The region also produces vast quantities of export apples, apricots, peaches, plums and cherries.

In winter this area is quite often covered in a blanket of snow.

Elgin/Grabouw Area

This is the Cape’s famous apple country. Its orchards produce 60% of South Africa’s export apple crop-the mouth watering Golden Delicious, Topred and Granny Smith and Royal Gala all come from this area

The Breede River Valley

This valley includes towns such as Worcester, Robertson, Bonnievale, Ashton and Montagu.

Worcester-This town houses the KWV brandy cellar, the largest of its kind in the world. The area around Worcester is dominated by wine producing vineyards, but fruit production is increasing significantly.

Robertson-This valley is less than 2 hours drive from Cape Town. It is known for its champion wines, champion horses and abundance of roses. The area have recently won great acclaim in South Africa and around the world for the production of outstanding white wines, such as Chardonnay, Colombar and Sauvignon Blanc, red wines and Cap Classique sparkling wines (champagne).

There is also an abundance of farms with apricots, peaches and nectarines.

Ashton-This is the home of the canned fruit industry. Two factories are responsible for canning thousands of tons of yellow clingstone peaches produced in the Breede River Valley and Little Karoo.

Montaqu-This town is famous for its healing hot springs and mouth watering apricots, peaches and nectarines. The local muscadel wines are also well known.

The Hex River Valley

This valley is always beautiful. The summers are lush and green, while in autumn the vineyards are aflame with reds, oranges and subtle shades of brown. In the winter the Matroosberg is often draped in a mantle of snow.

One cannot imagine that 3500 hectares of vineyards in this valley produces 50% of South Africa’s popular export table grapes. Barlinka is the most famous grape variety.
