Cattle Ranches-Beef and Dairy Farming

The latest estimates for head of cattle for S.A. is 13,8 million.South Africa normally produces 85% of its meat requirements.

Cattle ranches are found mainly in the North West Province,Eastern Cape,parts of the Orange Free State,KwaZulu-Natal and in the Northern Province.The indigenous Afrikaner,Bonsmara,Drakensberger and Nguni are popular beef breeds,but British,European and American breeds,such as Brahman,Charolais,

Hereford,Angus,Santa Gertrudes,Simmentaler and Sussex are maintained as pure breeds and are used in cross-breeding.

The Taurus Livestock Improvement Co-op provides the country’s beef farmers with and average of 110000 units of semen and the dairy industry with 580 000 units of semen for use in artificial insemination.

1,7 million head of cattle were slaughtered and gross value of the red meat industry was estimated to be about R4954 million.

Dairy farming occurs throughout South Africa with the highest concentration of dairy farms in the eastern and northern Free State,the KwaZulu-Natal Midlands,the Eastern and Western Cape,the Gauteng metropolitan area and the southern parts of Mpumalanga.Holstein Friesians(76%) and Jerseys(16%) are the dominant dairy breeds,followed by Ayrshires and Guernseys.
